Who is behind the idea of the Red Balloon Caravan?
The artist Matti!
With 37 years of professional experience – including more than two decades in Great Britain – I combine creative design with educational work.
My professional path has led me through the fields of design, illustration, typography, and media design, as well as into seminar rooms, studios, and educational institutions. Throughout this time, my focus has always been on not only expressing my own creativity but also passing it on to others.
My interest in teaching, however, has been with me for many years. As early as 1991 and 1992, in cooperation with the Protestant Church of Hanover and Saxony, I led several weekend seminars on the fundamentals of marketing. A particular focus of my work developed during my time with the aid organization ECAS in Edinburgh, where I worked from 2009 to 2022. There, I led weekly art classes for people with physical disabilities, organized day trips, and conducted seminars on the care of people with disabilities.
Furthermore, I taught blind and visually impaired people in art courses specifically tailored to their needs. This work was not only a professional task for me, but also a valuable personal enrichment.
In parallel, until 2022 I worked as a lecturer at various evening schools in Edinburgh, teaching calligraphy and watercolor painting. From 2010 to 2021, I also regularly gave day courses for the Scottish calligraphy association Glasgow Scribes, where I was able to share my enthusiasm for the art of beautiful writing with many participants.
I also helped develop creative educational programs in Germany. Between 2006 and 2008, I founded the calligraphy weekend seminars at Mariensee Monastery near Hanover and was also the first instructor there. From an idea, a program emerged that brought together art enthusiasts and fostered exchange about calligraphy and design.
From March 2023 to September 2025, I worked at the Celle Youth Employment Agency on a media-based pilot project. There, I supported young people in exploring social media, video and audio production, and career orientation. At the same time, I developed animations and illustrations designed to convey topics from the world of work in a clear and creative way.
Looking back, a common thread runs through my professional career: the connection between creativity, design, and education. Whether in a design studio, in the classroom, in social projects, or in adult education – my goal has always been to inspire people, help them discover their abilities, and make creative processes tangible.
